‘We(우리는) Dance(춤춘다)’.

위댄스는 아마도 한국 음악 역사상 가장 직관적인 이름을 가진 아티스트일 것이다. ‘위’댄스에서 ‘기’타를 치는 ‘위기’와 ‘위’댄스 ‘보’컬을 담당하는 ‘위보’가 뭉친 독특한 듀오는 21세기에 누구도 행하지 않는 방식으로 음악 커리어를 만들어 왔다. 쉬운 길이나 흔한 것엔 관심이 없던 위댄스가 음원 스트리밍과 일반적인 앨범 제작과정을 거부한 채, 그저 하고 싶은대로 능동적이고 실험적으로 만든 음악은 80여 곡에 달한다. 그 사이 한국은 물론이고 ‘Fuji Rock Festival’, ‘Primavera Sound’, ‘Big Sounds Festival’ 등 굵직한 해외 페스티벌에 초청을 받아 스페인, 프랑스, 일본, 호주, 홍콩, 싱가포르 등 세계 각지에서 팬을 만났다.

위댄스의 음악에서 뗄 수 없는 부분인 불협화음의 보컬과 기타 음은 잘 정돈된 음악에 익숙한 사람의 귀엔 다소 불편하게 느껴질 수도 있다. 하지만 위댄스가 펼쳐내는 음들은 어느 지점에서 돌발적으로 황홀하기 그지없는 팝을 형성한다. 이 독특하고 기이한 구성은 단번에 리스너의 마음을 흔들고 어느 순간 정신없이 춤을 추게 만든다. 위댄스의 특별함은 결코 음악에서만 오지 않는다. 마치 길거리 구제시장에서 영감을 받은 듯한 의상 스타일과 가장 깊숙한 내면에서 분출시킨 듯한 위보의 춤동작은 우리의 감각을 휘젓는다. 

3년 만의 새 앨범 <SUM>이 8월 24일 발매된다. 우리를 둘러싼 여리고 섬세한 감정의 본질을 포착하고자 한 이번 작업은 위댄스의 또 다른 독창적인 여정이다. 코로나바이러스로 온 세상이 정지해 있던 시기에 쓴 <SUM>은 작고 소중하고 아름다운 것들을 최대한 담아내기 위해 느리고 긴 호흡으로 만들어졌다.

<SUM>은 삶의 복잡함 속에 번뇌하는 당신을, 잠시나마 호기심과 연결이 번성하는 위댄스의 세계로 불러들여 편안히 한숨 내려놓게 만든다. 느리고 긴 호흡을 통해 섬세한 감정들의 춤선을 조용히 쫓아가려 했으나, 위댄스의 정신은 억제될 수 없었던바, 어느샌가 넋을 잃고 춤을 추게 만드는 작품이 탄생하였다. 밴드도 결코 예측하지 못한 결과이다. 자, 이제 눈을 뜨고 천천히 호흡하며 위댄스의 새 앨범을 만나보자.

Wedance. It’s a statement and a warning. The duo spends a great majority of their time on stage living up to the name wearing outfits that might be described, with the greatest amount of love possible, as retirement-community-inspired. Wedance, is a singularly difficult band to describe.

With songs about everyday life, a penchant for banging on a single cymbal in between dance breaks, dissonant vocals and dissonant guitars it’s hard to talk about this band without any musically-seasoned listener narrowing their eyes sceptically and possibly thinking they don’t know well. But these features come together to form a glorious confluence of a-tonal, spasmodic pop bliss that can feel at once anthemic and, of course, make you move in whatever weirdo way these unique compositions compel you. There’s not enough proudly odd stuff in this world, and so a Wedance set seems to speak to that feeling and acts then as a challenge and invitation; Wedance, do you?

Their eagerly anticipated new album, "숨 Sum" (Breath) - set to be released on August 24th 2023 - dances along a slack line of feelings capturing the essence of various delicate emotions. Written during a time when the world was at a standstill, "Sum'' marks a contemplative moment for Wedance, a slow, long breath to soak it all in.

As with all albums from Wedance, once you embark on a Wedance journey, there's no turning back.
